A tropical rainforest shrub native to Central Africa, it grows up to 2m in height but can form a 10m tree in ideal conditions. A native of Gabon, Africa, it prefers well composted, well drained soils in a protected partly shady position. It is drought and frost tender.

The stem is erect and branching with dark green leaves. The flowers are white to yellowish and widely expanding tubular.

Ibogaine, the active alkaloid, is used to treat substance abuse disorders and depression.
