An evergreen shrub that grows to a height of 2m with a spread of 2m. The stem is erect and branching with heart shaped, green and acuminate leaves. The flowers are whitish, occurring in short, axillary spikes. There are many different varieties, each with particular morphological and pharmacological differences.

A native of Polynesia, it prefers rich, moist, well-composted soils in a protected, partially shaded position, and it is drought and frost tender. This is the Hawaiian cultivar.

The roots of the plant are used to produce a drink with sedative and anesthetic properties. Kava is consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia, including Hawaii, Vanuatu, Melanesia and some parts of Micronesia. Kava is sedating and is primarily consumed to relax without disrupting mental clarity. Its active ingredients are called kavalactones.
