A perennial, woody, rather robust and vigorous climber that grows from a large tuberous rootstock. This African vine is traditionally used as an aphrodisiac, to improve appetite, and as a galactagogue, a fertility medication and an antidepressant.

Plants may be found in woodland and forest habitats, and even in swampy grassland. It is not frost-hardy, preferring tropical and subtropical habitats.

This vine displays attractive reddish purple flowers which usually have a green margin. The large fruits are mostly woody and contain many seeds.

Common name: Tonic Root; Mundondo; Mudondo; Mungurauwe

Syn: Mondia whytei; Mondia whiteii.
