Maytenus spp.



Maytenus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Celastraceae. The genus is distributed throughout Central and South America, Southeast Asia, Micronesia and Australasia, the Indian Ocean and Africa. Numerous medicinal uses are associated to the Maytenus genus species, with the use of roots, barks, and leaves for the treatment of gastric ulcers, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-allergy, antitumor, among others in South America. The bark of M. krukovii has a variety of documented medicinal properties; it is also sometimes admixed into decoctions of ayahuasca.
