A flowering evergreen tree or shrub It is widely cultivated for its edible pods, seeds for a chocolate substitute and as an ornamental tree in gardens and landscapes.

The pith in the pods is extremely sweet and was the main source of sugar before the use of sugarcane. Sucking the sweet stuff out of the pods is yummy and fun for the kids.

The carob tree is native to the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. Most trees are dioecious (male and female flowers are on separate plants). The large catkin-like flowers are borne on spurs growing along the branches and trunk. Only the female tree will produce fruit.

Prefers moderately fertile well drained soil. Will tolerate dry conditions but does better for occasional water during summer.

Common name: Carob Tree; St John's-Bread; Locust Bean.
