A perennial plant that grows to a height of 1.5m with a spread of 1m. A native to Europe, it prefers light to medium, well drained soils in an open, sunny position and is frost resistant but drought tender.
Sow seed in spring directly in the ground or into punnets. Make a shallow indent into seed mix or fine soil and sprinkle seeds in. Cover lightly (5mm) with fine, sandy soil. Keep moist but not wet. Seedlings will emerge within a few weeks.
An aromatic herb, with attractive flower spikes. Leaves are traditionally smoked for mild sedation. The fresh leaves can be consumed as a tea; the dried leaves make a very pleasant smoke or can also be used to make tea. The effect is a mild, but very definite euphoria, which can be enhanced with the simultaneous consumption of Damiana. Two tablespoons full of each in a large mug of water is traditional preparation.
