A hybrid cross of pach. FIELDS and terscheckii SA SS. A seed cross from Australian breeder Rodni Kisar.

T. pach Fields is an Australian clone from the Fields Collection, is a very old strain with a rich history. Ralph Fields, the founder of the Fields Collection, was a supporter of Harry Blossfeld’s early South America trips and it is thought this clone comes from one of those early trips, however this has not been verified due to lack of quotable sources.

Fields is a typical pach with large areoles which are covered in fluff and short golden spines. The body displays very dominant V notches and the colour changes from bright green to glaucous blue.

T. terscheckii originated South Australia giving it the SA name part and is the short spined form of terscheckii giving it it’s SS part, resulting in ‘SA SS’.

T. terscheckii initially grows as a single, columnar cactus that are fat for their small size. As the plant matures, it grows numerous arms and takes on a tree-like appearance. T. terscheckii can reach a height of 10-15m and up to 60cm in diameter. Rib count can be 8-15 and spines can be near non-existent to up to 10cm long.

“T. terscheckii is a variable species that is a catch-all name for a variety of different forms, some of which form intermediates with other species like Trichocereus atacamensis, Trichocereus taquimbalensis, Trichocereus validus and others.”

A hybrid is formed when crossing two genetically different species with each other. Most hybrids are manmade however some are natural.

With cross pollination the mother plant is the first name, and the father plant is the second. The mother is the plant whose flower was pollenated, and the fruit ripens on, and the father is the pollen donor. When the crossing plants, in most cases, the resulting offspring comes closer to the mother than to the father. However, there are a lot of exceptions to this and sometimes, the genes of the father are simply more dominant.
