Native to South America, this unusual plant produces the edible fruit directly on the trunk. A slow-growing tropical to subtropical evergreen tree that grows up to 4-5m in height (said to grow to 15m un-pruned).

The fruit is thick-skinned, grape-like, with a sweet, juicy, gelatinous, white pulp. Due to the extremely short shelf-life of 3-4 days the fruit is commonly used to make jams, jellies and drinks.

Traditionally, an astringent decoction of the sun-dried skins has been used as a treatment for hemoptysis, asthma, diarrhoea, and gargled for chronic inflammation of the tonsils.

Several potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory anti-cancer compounds have been isolated from the fruit.

Syn: Myrciaria cauliflora; Eugenia cauliflora; Myrtus cauliflora.

Common name: Jaboticaba: Brazilian Grape Tree; Jabotica; Jabuticabeira; Guaperu; Guapuru; Hivapuru.
