A deciduous, tropical shrub that grows up to 3m in height, it produces a mass of small yellow flowers. An important visionary plant for the traditional inhabitants of the highlands of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, Mexico.

Indigenous to Mexico, and cultivated in most of South America, it prefers well-drained soils in dry and hot climates, does best in a sunny position and is drought resistant, but frost tender.

Used widely in traditional medicine, the species acts as a general tonic, sudorific, antipyretic, haemostatic, emetic, laxative, diaphoretic, diuretic, astringent, antisyphilitic and vulnerary. A fermented beverage that when traditionally prepared may cause mild intoxication, auditory hallucinations, yellowing and darkening of field of vision and improved memory function.
