From the renaming of all Trichocereus to Echinopsis in 1974 to these decisions being partially undone later on the questions surrounding Trichocereus or Echinopsis are many. I will do my best to loosely define the genus Echinopsis as the following, a large genus of cacti native to South America, sometimes known as Hedgehog cactus, Sea-urchin cactus or Easter lily cactus. The 128 species range from large and treelike types to small globose cacti. The flowers of most clumping Echinopsis species are different and smaller than the ones on Trichocereus and Trichocereus flowers are hairy and covered with scales in a way that doesn’t occur in most Echinopsis species. The fruits are different and a lot of Echinopsis are clumpers instead of the columnar Trichocereus.
