Aspalathus spp.

Aspalathus species are generally shrubs or sometimes shrublets. Aspalathus linearis, commonly known as the rooibos tea plant, is the only species of economic value. Originally different Aspalathus species and ecotypes were used to produce rooibos tea but today only A. linearis is used. The tea has been popular in Southern Africa for generations, and since the 2000s has gained popularity internationally. The tea has an earthy flavour, similar to yerba mate or tobacco.
