A deciduous shrub growing to 1.2 m in height and spanning 1m. Growth is upright, in a bushy clump of very ferny, light green leaves. It releases a camphor fragrance when touched. A hardy plant that grows in most conditions, is heat and drought tolerant.

Known to be an antiseptic and has been used to treat liver, spleen and stomach problems. Also said to kill intestinal worms.

In Germany it is used in poultices placed on wounds, splinters and skin conditions and it is employed occasionally to treat frostbite. A leaf infusion works as a natural insect repellent when applied to the skin or to combat dandruff when rinsed through the hair.

A yellow wool dye can be extracted from the branches, and its dried leaves are used as a moth repellent in wardrobes.
